Paying To Comment on News Sites

A while back the Lewiston Sun Journal discontinued anonymous commenting on news stories and went to a verification system.  No big deal, I felt, I have never been one to hide myself from my own words.  While it met with a great deal of opposition, the comment sections became, not tamer, but more respectful in what was said.  This was a good thing as people were not able to post with impunity anymore, and others were able to post knowing anyone who became insulting or degrading would be held accountable. Net Neutrality

Net Neutrality

Let me be clear, I know next to nothing about the net neutrality argument, except for the fact it is a bad idea overall, for everyone.  The entire concept of the ISPs determining what content we get the best access to, provided they are paid enough, is as archaic as a caveman chasing a wooly mammoth with a club for dinner.

I’ve never had any dealings with Comcast, however, I have with Time Warner and, to be blunt, they are nastier than a used douche.  Raising prices, lowering service, restricting service in certain markets because there is no competition…  The list goes on and anyone with online access has certainly faced similar if not worse encounters.

So, to me, this concept of tier 1 and tier 2 internet makes no sense and only benefits the ISPs who will be able to charge these companies whatever they want to promote their content.  Even the businesses will not benefit, as has been seen many times before, the users of the internet are very proactive and will boycott the businesses which pay for Tier 1 and in the end, those businesses will have spent money for nothing.
The FCC needs to switch ISPs over to common carriers and preserve what net neutrality is supposed to be about.  This is the only way the internet will remain as we know it–and if they do adopt this tier idea, perhaps we will get some ambitious people to come forward and provide us with ISP services which will not allow any business premium access. Enhanced by Zemanta

Dear Facebook,

On June 29, I will be turning 40 years old.  My gift to myself will be completely removing myself from Facebook once and for all.  Which direction I go from here I do not know, but it will be to something more friendly to its users.

What started out as a great and amazing idea, has quickly become nothing more than an excuse to make money; at your user’s expense.  As with any technology, change is to be expected and so I have not complained publicly about the changes over time to Facebook.  However, this increasing issue with the News Feed, on both the web application and the Android app is becoming quite silly.  When I click Most Recent, I want to see the newest stuff first and then the older stuff arranged by time–as does anyone else.  On the Android app, now you have the Most Recent choice hidden and it still does not always show things properly, why is this such a hard concept for you?

Why is it you put no bearing on what your users want?  Is it the almighty dollar?  Well, that is a double edged sword as we can merely leave your service and find another–and if demand becomes high enough another service will appear which meets our needs.

While I do not reasonably expect everyone to boycott Facebook as I am, all I really ask is for people to think about it.  Change comes about from action, either cancelling your account or not using it.  It does nothing to complain about things Facebook does while sitting there playing Farmvill or Words With Friends.

I would like to see everyone who reads this re-blogging it, posting a link, whatever ya can to pass the message along.  We can make the change we want if we are willing to take the action required to achieve it.

See you all on Tumblr or Google+, have not really decided which I am going with yet.
